Tom Quinlan, President of Parrots & Pellets, LLC has been breeding Sun, Blue Crown, and Green Cheek Conures, as well as Cockatiels, and other parrots for over 20 years. In 2006, Tom met with Mike Underwood, the manufacturer of Dr. D's Pellets, purchased a 50 lb. bag, and began feeding it to his birds. Impressed with the results, Tom began sharing samples of the feed with his breeder friends. They too were impressed, reporting bigger babies, brighter feathers, larger clutches, and larger, healthier breeder birds. Tom also shared samples with pet bird owners who found the results to be outstanding! He began receiving inquiries regarding how to order Dr. D's, but discovered that unless they were breeders, most bird owners found a 25 lb bag to be just too much to order at one time. They wanted to continue feeding Dr. D's, but felt the bags were just too large. Because Tom had seen the results that could be had, he believed the Dr. D's diets were a worthy choice for bird owners and wanted to make the food easier to order in smaller packages. Tom convinced the manufacturer that pet bird owners would be more likely to buy the product and keep using it, if it was available in smaller packaging. hence his journey into distributorship. Dr. D's Avian Pellets are now available in 2 lb. and 5 lb. 3 mil barrier bags for extended shelf life, as well as the original 25 lb. and 50 lb. bags. The response was overwhelmingly positive. He now ships Dr. D's Avian Pellets all over the country, as well as supplying a number of pet stores in South Eastern Michigan.. Tom's goal is to give very personalized service and keep prices as low as possible so that bird owners all over the world can benefit from the premium nutrition Dr. D's provides. UPDATE JANUARY 30 - On January 27, 2012, Tom passed away. The Parrots and Pellets operation was assumed by dear friends who are committed to continuing Tom's passion for his birds, customers, and friends. Don and Andrea are parrot breeders who were once looking for a superb dietary supplement for their birds, eventually leading them to Dr D's and Tom. You will notice that contact information, such as e-mail, telephone, and address, have changed. I personally apologize for interruption in service the last few days while Tom was in the hospital. However, the business is back up and running as of today. If you placed an order using old contact information, please submit a new order so that Parrots and Pellets can continue meeting your birds' dietary needs. My heartfelt condolences go out to those who came to know Tom through Parrots and Pellets, many of whom also became his friends. -Pat Quinlan, Jan 30, 2012
Dr. D's diets are grain-based, having no animal products in them. Plant protein is less digestible than animal protein, therefore the need [for an increase in the diets]. Plant protein is healthier and safer than animal protein. In addition, the exclusion of animal products helps to prevent E-Coli and Salmonella poisoning. [20% plant protein is comparable to 15% animal protein.] There are no artificial flavors or colors in our feed for we do not know what long term health effects coloring dyes and flavorings may have on your birds. Pellets have a distinct advantage over seeds. Dr, D's is a nutritionally complete, balanced diet, helping to reduce your costs. Birds eat approximately 20% less of a pelleted diet than they do a seed-based diet. Additional supplementation is really unnecessary, though the occasional treat is always welcomed by your bird (read more about this topic below). The only additional item you really need to offer is clean, fresh water.
When feeding a pelleted diet, it is recommended that you do not mix different brands of pellet. We understand that folks feel the need to supplement their birds diet...it just doesn't seem possible that one pellet could contain all the nutrients their birds need. However, Dr. D's is a complete and balanced diet, containing everything your bird needs to remain robust and healthy. There is no need for supplementation or mixing of other pellet into Dr. D's. In fact, mixing diets and/or changing the diet frequently can actually short change your bird of the nutrients it needs to remain healthy. Please, find a good diet and stick with it. If you try a new diet for a few months and it does not work for you, please change it, but it is wise to find a nutritionally complete diet and stick with it. TREATS: Offering your bird treats from time to time will not hurt as long as you keep treats to a minimum. The reason behind this is that to include more than 20% other foodstuffs can literally upset the balance of the diet. This is true of any pelleted diet. Remember, Dr. D's is formulated by Avian Nutritionists with over 25 years experience in the field of Avian Nutrition! To keep your birds diet perfectly balanced, please try to keep treats to less than 20% of the total diet.
